Progress and results

Here follows some key milestones within the project.

June 2023

The project received official approval from CINEA, the governing body of the EU LIFE program. Find the report here.

January 2023

On January 26 we presented the results from the EU LIFE-funded nitrogen removal and recovery project RE-Fertilize. The webinar was focused on the results, and the way forward.

December 2022

In the middle of December we conducted a conceptual design for a Aqua2N-plant with capacity of 10 m3/h incoming water is finalized.

Also, results from the pot trials conducted with ammonium sulphate from both leachate and sludge liquor application was presented. Proving that the agronomic effect of the recycled fertiliser is comparable with conventionally, virgin produced, ammonium sulphate.

November 2022

In November the UN climate conference (COP27) took place in Egypt and EasyMining had several representatives on site that participated in different talks about the nitrogen challenge, and RE-Fertilize project. Read more about our COP27 participation here.

October 2022

We made our first delivery of nitrogen fertiliser produced within the LIFE RE-Fertilize project to a farm in Denmark.

August - September 2022

In August and September, BIOFOS and EasyMining arranged three possibilities (24/8, 5/9 and 15/9) to visit the demonstration plant at BIOFOS’ wastewater treatment plant Lynetten in Copenhagen. More than 100 people had registered for the round tour, including an introduction to the process and a visit to the demonstration plant.

On the 7th of September, we celebrated the inauguration of the pilot plant at Denmark’s largest wastewater treatment plant, BIOFOS’ Lynetten. Previously, the plant has been tested on leachate at Ragn-Sells' waste plant in Högbytorp outside Stockholm.

The process recovers more than 98% of the nitrogen that is in reject water from the dewatering of digested sludge. During fall, the pilot will be running on the sludge liquor.

March 2022

The 30th of March the demonstration plant is delivered to BIOFOS wastewater treatment plant Lynetten in Copenhagen.

The 24th of March the first recycled ammonium sulphate delivered to farmer!

Lantmännen and EasyMining deliveres the first recycled ammonium sulphate to a farm outside Uppsala.

The ammonium sulphate has been produced in the RE-Fertilize demonstration plant at Högbytorp, Ragn-Sells’ waste management plant outside Stockholm.

In the last week of March, the demonstration plant will be moved to BIOFOS’s wastewater treatment plant Lynetten in Copenhagen.

December 2021

Wednesday, 8 December we celebrated the grand opening of the pilot plant at Högbytorp, Ragn-Sells’ waste management plant outside Stockholm,

The official ribbon cutting ceremony featured speeches by Mattias Frumerie from the Swedish Ministry of Environment and partnering companies in the project; EasyMining, BIOFOS, Lantmännen, and the environmental company Ragn-Sells.

November 2021

Very important month for the project both communication wise and progress wise. We have presented the technology and project in three sessions at COP26.

On Saturday the 6th of November, Professor Mark Sutton attended the session and did a great presentation on the nitrogen challenge overall. Our project partner, BIOFOS, also participated in each session giving an excellent explanation to the challenge for wastewater treatment plants. Read more about our participation at COP26 and see the recording of the broadcasts here.

In the second week of November, the two modules of the demonstration plant arrived at Högbytorp, Ragn-Sells’ waste management plant outside Stockholm, where the demonstration plant will be running the first three months before being moved to BIOFOS wastewater treatment plant, Lynetten, in Denmark. It is so exciting and rewarding to have reached this milestone!

September 2021

Full focus on fabrication of the demonstration plant and planning and preparation for the demonstration run.

At the same time we continue to present our technology, this month at the NORDIWA conference. Read more and see recording from the brodcast

August 2021

The steel structure for the first module is now ready to insert equipment within, great to see the progress! We are now in the planning for the demonstration runs, schedule to start late quarter four 2021 at Ragn-Sells’ landfill Högbytorp outside Bro.

In the important work of creating a circular economy for nutrients we have published an article demanding quotas for recycled nutrients within fertilisers. It is not enough to create supply, there also must be a demand!

The RE-Fertilize project was financed by the EU LIFE programme. Project number LIFE18 ENV/SE/000265.
